Offsite Post: ‘The Orthodox Bishops in the United States Act Culturally Illiterate’

There seems to be quite a fair amount of cultural tone-deafness and historical ignorance amidst the episcopacy of the various Orthodox jurisdictions in the United States.  Abp. Elpidophoros of the Greek Archdiocese of America epitomizes this in his 2023 Thanksgiving Encyclical.  A mistake is made right in the opening line:

Our National Day of Thanksgiving arrives in a time when the world is in turmoil, and “wars and rumors of wars” (Matthew 24:6) cast a pall over the global community.

Anyone who has read more than the simplified comic book version of U.S. history (to use Dr. Clyde Wilson’s words) will understand that the United States are not ‘one nation indivisible.’  Those words, and the whole Pledge of Allegiance, were written by a socialist, Francis Bellamy, in the 1890s:

What’s so conservative about the Pledge?

Very little, as it turns out. From its inception, in 1892, the Pledge has been a slavish ritual of devotion to the state, wholly inappropriate for a free people. It was written by Francis Bellamy, a Christian Socialist pushed out of his post as a Baptist minister for delivering pulpit‐pounding sermons on such topics as Jesus the Socialist. Bellamy was devoted to the ideas of his more‐famous cousin Edward Bellamy, author of the 1888 utopian novel Looking BackwardLooking Backward describes the future United States as a regimented worker’s paradise where everyone has equal incomes, and men are drafted into the country’s “industrial army” at the age of 21, serving in the jobs assigned them by the state. Bellamy’s novel was extremely popular, selling more copies than other any 19th century American novel except Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Bellamy’s book inspired a movement of “Nationalist Clubs,” whose members campaigned for a government takeover of the economy. A few years before he wrote the Pledge of Allegiance, Francis Bellamy became a founding member of Boston’s first Nationalist Club.

After leaving the pulpit, Francis Bellamy decided to advance his authoritarian ideas through the public schools. Bellamy wrote the Pledge of Allegiance for Youth’s Companion, a popular children’s magazine. With the aid of the National Education Association, Bellamy and the editors of Youth’s Companion got the Pledge adopted as part of the National Public School Celebration on Columbus Day 1892.

Bellamy’s recommended ritual for honoring the flag had students all but goosestepping their way through the Pledge: “At a signal from the Principal the pupils, in ordered ranks, hands to the side, face the Flag. Another signal is given; every pupil gives the Flag the military salute–right hand lifted, palm downward, to a line with the forehead and close to it… At the words, ‘to my Flag,’ the right hand is extended gracefully, palm upward, towards the Flag, and remains in this gesture till the end of the affirmation; whereupon all hands immediately drop to the side.” After the rise of Nazism, this form of salute was thought to be in poor taste, to say the least, and replaced with today’s hand‐on‐heart gesture.

Furthermore, the traditional view of the nature of the union of the States was that of a voluntary union.  Each State was equivalent to a nation of Europe or any other continent, able to come and go as she wished from the United States.  The historian Dr J. A. C. Chandler wrote a long piece on the U.S. constitution of 1787, explaining that view (we part ways with him on the purported ‘sovereignty of the people,’ however):

As an introduction to the subject, let us examine the Southern view of the nature of the constitution. To Southerners, the Union was a compact, entered into by separate and distinct political bodies. Such was the Union of the states under the Articles of Confederation, and such the South believed was the Union under the present constitution. According to this compact theory, the government of the United States was created by the states and all the powers of the Federal government are held in trust for the states themselves. Sovereignty, therefore, does not belong to the government of the United States or to any state government, but to the people who made the government of the United States and the states, that is, to the people of the several states taken individually and not to the people of the United States as one mass. These are the views expressed by Alexander H. Stephens, and, in general, were the views held at the time of the adoption of the constitution of the United States. Such were the views of Mr. Madison and Mr. Jefferson, and even of Mr. Hamilton himself, with reference to the question of sovereignty, though Mr. Hamilton differed from Mr. Madison and Mr. Jefferson as to the limitations placed upon the Federal government.

This view is verified in actual history by the fact that North Carolina existed outside the U.S. for a time, as did Texas and Vermont, before they decided to join the union.  And the Treaty of Paris of 1783 that formally ended the colonies’ war for independence with Great Britain names, in its first article, each former colony as a sovereign, independent country:

His Brittanic Majesty acknowledges the said United States, viz., New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, to be free sovereign and independent states, that he treats with them as such, and for himself, his heirs, and successors, relinquishes all claims to the government, propriety, and territorial rights of the same and every part thereof.

Now, who was it that brought a violent end to this understanding of the union?  None other than Pres. Abraham Lincoln, the very same one of whom Abp. Elpidophoros quotes sympathetically in his encyclical:

Offsite Post: ‘The Right Foundation’

Dark clouds are hanging over Louisiana and the rest of the States.  LRN had this disturbing report:

A new report by the C-D-C reveals the suicide rate in the U-S last year reached a record high. More than 49 thousand people took their own life. . . . The federal data shows the rate of suicide by any method has increased by one-third in the past two decades . . . .

KNOE unfortunately had an even more grisly story:

NEW IBERIA, La. (KPLC) - The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of an 11-year-old girl on suspicion of murder. The girl, whos identity was not disclosed, is suspected of fatally shooting 36-year-old Kameran Bedsole on Nov. 14 in the 4700 block of Jasper Road in New Iberia. Deputies found Bedsole suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. . . .

We are certainly looking forward in Louisiana to the new Landry administration, the new State Legislature, BESE board, etc., with their plans for tax reform, their tougher stance on crime, and all the rest of it.  But there is still an elephant in the middle of the room that no one wants to mention, which is the source of that river of woeful stories like the ones above:  the spiritual desolation of the souls of Louisianans and the peoples of our sister States.

That desolation is happening because we are not Christian societies but Antichristian societies.  That is not meant to be attention-getting over-exaggeration.  It is simply what we find in the Holy Scriptures.  The Holy Apostle John the Theologian declares,

Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also.  . . .  By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit which confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit which does not confess Jesus is not of God. This is the spirit of antichrist, of which you heard that it was coming, and now it is in the world already (I John 2:22-23, 4:2-3).

Where do we find in the States any major culture-shaping institution declaring openly and often that Jesus Christ is God in the Flesh and that we ought to obey His commandments if we really love Him (I John 5:3) – whether it is healthcare/drug companies, governments, schools, Hollywood, car makers, energy companies, the military, etc.?  Simply put, almost all of them say no such thing.  Instead, there is rejection, either through silence or by open opposition.  Furthermore, a majority of people in the States believe that Jesus Christ is not God and that He committed sins while on earth (may He forgive us for heeding such evil lies).  All of that, unfortunately, places us squarely within St. John’s definition of Antichristian.

Though the Lord Jesus Himself warned us very clearly about the consequences of turning away from Him - ‘He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters’ (St. Matthew’s Gospel 12:30) –  still, more and more people reject God and do not want to keep His commandments.  Many want to satisfy their own desires instead, to the point that fat people will complain about ‘weight discrimination’ instead of making some changes to slim down; to the point that federal judges will strike down State laws banning adult drag shows performed in the presence of children in order to protect the ‘free-speech rights’ of the LGBT crowd.  Others are seeking the old pagan concept of ‘kleos’ (eternal glory) through their social media exploits.  And when things like these fail to satisfy, then these poor people despair, and many turn to murder, whether themselves or someone else – so drained of hope and love that even the children are now rising up to slay adults.  To say it once again, we have created and are living in Antichristian societies.

A Christian society has a completely different feel and focus to it.  Rev. Alban Butler described it pretty well at the end of the life of the virgin-martyr St. Bibiana (+4th century):

Offsite Post: ‘The Power of Women’

A woman is a mysterious thing,

Whose simple, single ‘How’s it goin’?’

Is enough to befuddle a man,

To frustrate his focus,

To weaken his strength.

The women who want to exercise

Maximum power in the world

By putting on a pair of pants

And sitting on a corporate board

Or in a senator’s chair

Have got it all quite wrong –

Offsite Post: ‘German Greatness’

Germany, Germany,

Your strength and glory

Do not lie in Reichs or Führers,

Nor in Iron Chancellors,

But rather in a monk-missionary

Raised in a monastery,

Blessed by Boniface,

And like him an apostle to your race.

This Sturmi, founder of Fulda,

The nuns Gunthild and Agatha,

The martyr Ursula –

Offsite Post: ‘Will America Complete Its Revolution?’

Many Evangelical Protestants in the United States believe that the States of the union have always been Christian and that the current apostasy is an aberration.  It would more truthful to say that the US have been living in a delusional dream world for many years.  Their religious life resembles the story of a demoniac related by an Orthodox priest named Fr. Evgeny:

<<<Fr. Evgeny started asking the man about his life. As it turns out, he had searched long and stubbornly for himself in the spiritual sense. But instead of going to church he had gone, now to various old ladies, now to sorcerers, now to various “spiritual” movements—of which there were many in his town. You could find any occult movement according to taste.

Finally he chose the least radical one, which was very popular in the region, a kind of Billy Graham. But not exactly him.

“In general, it’s of course amazing how ordinary, practical rural Ukrainians were so “taken” by all sorts of American religious figures,” Fr. Evgeny said to me, “but what happened, happened…”

Their talks were constantly being broadcast on Ukrainian television, with a return address: “Join us, and we’ll send you a Bible.”

“The man watched a program, wrote a letter, received a Bible, and started studying it,” Fr. Evgeny went on. “With time he drew his acquaintances, friends, and family into this process, and a Bible study group formed around him. In the end, these people said to him, “Listen! You know the Bible better than all of us, you cite it and sort it all out. Why not become our pastor?” So they chose him as their pastor.”

This man started leading their “services.” And the further it went, the more amazed everyone was at how well he understood God’s word, how many citations he had in his head, how much he knew and how well he explained it all…

“That’s how they praised him: ‘You’re great! What a smart guy!’ until this problem arose,” said Fr. Evgeny.

That day the man was at home, studying the Bible as usual. Then suddenly Christ appeared to him, in radiant light, shining garments, etc., just like in the Lives of the Saints.

“You are one of my best disciples!” a voice sounded. “You have learned the word of God better than anyone I know. But that’s not enough. In order to have the fullness, you need to unite with me. Do you agree to have me enter into you?”

“I agree,” the man joyfully replied. “Of course I agree!”

After these words it was as if he were struck by lightning. His body shook, the picture of the good-natured, shining Christ shattered before his eyes, and he heard terrifying laughter:

“Ha-ha-ha, I’m satan!”

And immediately the two invisible devils appeared on his shoulders and started talking with each other.

Batiushka didn’t make any of this up. This is what the man told him.

His sister and mother said that he began to smash the furniture in the room and shatter the windows. They had to call the ambulance and the police. That is, the militia—that’s what they were still called then.

They put him into a straitjacket, injected him with tranquilizers, and treated them however they could. But in the end they couldn’t do anything with the “comrades” who had appeared on the man’s shoulders, and so they sent him to church.

“But the whole problem is that they came to me for a ‘pill’,” Fr. Evgeny told me. “At the hospital they told them what to do, and they obeyed. ‘Batiushka, do something, quickly!’ But when I started telling them about repentance, about entering into the life of the Church, they waved me aside. ‘No-no-no, not that. He knows the Bible well enough as it is. He himself is a pastor! We just need these two to leave his shoulders and so that he would get physically better. That’s all!’ But that this was prelest [spiritual delusion] (for that is what it was), they simply didn’t want to know. The devil had deluded him, telling him about his supposed spiritual gifts. And in fact, he had almost told him the truth—that he needs to unite with Christ. But the lie was that this was how to do it. This is done in the Church, in the Sacraments. There is no salvation outside the Church! And the gates of hell will not prevail over it! But this man had started thinking of himself as a “church”. He himself studied, himself wrote this or that, and himself distributed his books. He had organized a sect and become its head. And then ‘christ’ tells him, ‘You’re the best. You’re super!’ And so he entered into him. Only it wasn’t Christ, but the evil one. And he even put two demons on his shoulders. It was these demons that this man and his family wanted to rid themselves. But not of his ‘chosenness’—no! Thus they left and never returned. Well, it was just as it’s written by the holy fathers… I had read it and doubted, but here I saw it with my own eyes. The Lord showed me…”>>>

So many things from this story parallel the general history of religion in the US:  the free practice of all kinds of religions, including the occult; the self-interpretation of the Bible; the forming of a new ‘church’.  Very many people in every State pride themselves on such behavior, thinking that the ‘free exercise of religion’ is a great virtue and will lead to good things for society.  But the story of Fr. Evgeny proves just the opposite is true:  This kind of Christianity cut off from the true Tradition found in the Orthodox Church – the Ecumenical Councils, the teachings of Holy Fathers and Mothers, the lives of the Saints, the hymns, etc. – turns one into a dupe of the devil.  This is where the US are now:  The devil has appeared to them in the guise of Christ saying, ‘You are a mighty federation; but if you unite with me, I will make you exceptional and indispensable.’  The ‘church’ in the US accepted the devil as Christ and has gone mad from the subsequent possession by evil spirits.  They have gone the whole world over smashing to pieces one country after another.  They could be healed, but they fail to renounce their ‘chosenness’.

And yet, while the States have fomented many revolutions abroad, they have not experienced the full depths of that terror for themselves.  They have had brief encounters with it, as in the War for Independence from the British Empire and in the War of Northern Aggression (often falsely called the Civil War), but they have refrained from full initiation into that evil world.  But they are getting ever closer to doing so.  Some words of St. Theophan the Recluse (+1894) show just how close:
